The new Meath West constituency was established in 2004 following The Constituency Commissions' Report on Dail Constituencies 2004. This commission was the second statutory constituency commission to be established under the Electoral Act 1997.

The report was presented to the Chairman of the Dail on 7th January 2004.

The new 3 seat constituency consists of the western part of County Meath (including Kells, Navan and Trim) and the former Delvin Rural District in County Westmeath.

The Meath West Constituency has a population of 75,000.
