KILMAINHAMWOOD IN THE DARK |

Kells Electoral Area Friday, 30th January 2009 Cllr Brian Collins, Cathaoirleach of Kells Town Council and a candidate for Labour in the County Council Elections has called for a sensible approach to public lighting across the County.
“There are busy and populated areas of the County that have no public lighting. In Kilmainhamwood there is no lighting alongside the Nursing Home or the Edenwood estate. There are also areas of the County where a mixture of public lighting and private commercial lighting have streets lit up like airports. Clearly a sensible approach in the difficult economic times we face is for a slight dimming of the public lights in such abundantly lit areas. A drop in power of 5% or so would create significant savings which should be ring-fenced and invested back into providing lighting where none exists at all.”
“Equally the main reason for public lighting is to provide safety and comfort to pedestrians. Therefore along motorways and major roads where there is no pedestrian footfall we should look at dropping the power levels or putting in slightly lower wattage bulbs. This too would save a lot of money and allow the Council to spend money on public lighting where it is urgently needed”
