Cllr Brian Collins, Cathaoirleach of Kells Town Council and a candidate for Labour in the County Council Elections has said that he is coming across an ever increasing number of disaffected Fianna Fail and Green Party supporters. He has said that if anyone wishes to leave aside their old allegiances and join the Labour Party he will personally bring their membership applications to Labour Party Headquarters and have them signed up.
“Clearly we are always open to new members and if anyone wants to join the Labour Party, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. It would be one of the most effective ways to demonstrate your rejection of the Governments ineptitude and incompetence. However following the cuts in public transport a further two Green Party Councillors have now left that Party. It is clear both remaining Government Parties have lost touch with their grassroots and the electorate. They are now living in an ivory tower, surrounded by mercs and Government jets. They don’t seem to know what is happening on the ground. Brian Lenihan’s statement this week that the Irish economy is thriving is just a further example of how out of touch they have become”
“I am now calling for all of those people who previously supported the Government Parties but who are now alarmed at the direction this country is taking to give serious consideration to joining Labour. Alternatively they can use the rapidly approaching local elections as an opportunity to send a strong message to the Government. If they come out and vote for Labour candidates then they will be letting the Government know that they support Eamon Gilmore and Labour’s vision for how to achieve National Recovery.”
